About Airbrushing

Airbrushing is a technique that utilizes a compressed air tool (the "airbrush") that sprays paint onto a surface. The airbrush works by transmitting fast moving, compressed air through a tiny opening at the end of the airbrush. The air's high velocity churns the paint out and is then carried out over the surface. Airbrushing can be performed in two ways--either by using a stencil or doing it entirely freehand. Freehand airbrushing is far more popular.

About the Artist

Robert O'Daniel has been airbrushing for more than 8 years. The "Iwata Eclipse HPB-CS" is his preferred airbrush and uses Badger's "Spectra Tex" paint.

"I love to airbrush" he said. "When I first started airbrushing, many seasoned airbrush artists were reluctant in sharing their knowledge with me. Needless to say that was very discouraging. Now, after doing this for a while, I prefer to help those just starting out because I know what it was like. But I was lucky to have met a few kind artists early on when I started. Frustration came quickly when I first learned how to airbrush" he said. "But it is like learning a new language. If you look at it that way you can learn just about anything.

"Today, instead of sending airbrush newbies on their way without giving them answers to their questions, I'm only hurting myself. Helping them for a better understanding energizes their desire to airbrush.

Their joy comes right back to me." †
